Goldberg: Beyond the Variations
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, February 12, 2017 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Johann Gottlieb Goldberg was a keyboardist and composer who is not remembered for his music but rather for being the namesake of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations. Goldberg studied with Bach and his son, W.F. Bach, and legend has it he was the harpsichordist who spent long nights playing the keyboard variations J.S. wrote for an insomniac Count. This week Gottlieb’s own music gets its due when we listen to a brand new recording from Rebel called Goldberg: Beyond the Variations.
And Rachel talks with North Carolina pianist/composer, Chad Lawson, about why he wrote his variations on Bach’s music and how he survived sugary breakfasts.
