The Margrave
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, March 12, 2017 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
In 1721, Bach presented this set of instrumental works to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg-Schwedt perhaps hoping to gain employment.
The Margrave, whether it was because his ensemble of musicians was too small or for some other reason, locked the manuscripts in a drawer where they stayed until his death. Pity the poor Margrave because he never got to hear what we now call the Brandenburg Concertos which are considered some of the best orchestral compositions of the Baroque era.
Fortunately for us, someone eventually unlocked that drawer, and in modern times countless recordings have been made of these masterpieces. This week we’ll listen to the 2014 Brandenburg album by the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.
And Rachel will talk with Bridgette Lacy about her book, Sunday Dinner: a Savor the South Cookbook, which celebrates the South’s favorite meal of the week.
