Farinelli
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, July 2, 2017 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Farinelli is the most celebrated castrato singer in history. He was the 18th-century equivalent of a rock star. But he was more than a popular singer. After moving to Spain in 1737, he rose to become artistic director of palace theatres in Madrid and Aranjuez and is credited with elevating Spanish musical life through those positions.
Spanish conductor, Pablo Heras-Casado has assembled a collection of works associated with Farinelli during his time in Spain on the 2014 Arkiv Produktion album called, El Maestro – Farinelli, which he performs with Concerto Cologne. We'll sample several tracks this week including a composition by Farinelli's mentor, Nicola Porpora.
