Bach’s Sonatas for Violin
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, September 3, 2017 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
For much of his career, Bach was a church musician. But for a six year period, 1717-23, he worked for Prince Leopold August in Cӧthen who was a Calvinist and required very little music for religious services. During his time at Cӧthen, Bach had the opportunity to focus on composing instrumental works. In this period he produced his Brandenburg concertos and much of his chamber music, including the groundbreaking violin sonatas. This week we listen to some of those sonatas as recorded by violinist Viktoria Mullova and harpsichordist Ottavio Dantone on their 2007 Onyx album, J. S. Bach Sonatas.
