Bach Sonatas for Oboe
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, March 4, 2018 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
This week we explore Bach sonatas that are believed to have been written for Bach’s eldest son, Wilhelm Friedemann, as exercises for the pedal clavichord or pedal harpsichord. We’ll listen to oboist Heinz Holliger’s 1989 recording where they are presented as oboe trio sonatas.
And Rachel chats with one of the most acclaimed pianists of our time, Leon Fleisher. Fleisher lost the use of his right hand in the mid-1960s and had to reinvent his career by performing repertoire for the left hand. One of the key works in that repertoire is Bach’s Chaconne, originally for solo violin, arranged for the left hand by Johannes Brahms.
Leon Fleisher explains why Brahms’ arrangement is so great. He also tells a story involving music lessons, an old school piano teacher and lamb chops.
