The Six Suites for ‘Cello Solo for Acoustic Guitar
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, July 29, 2018 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
In 1720 J.S. Bach returned home from a long trip to Carlsbad to discover that his wife, Maria Barbara, had died in his absence. Not long afterward, he produced the achingly beautiful Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin and the Suites for Solo Cello. Could it be that these compositions were the result of Bach’s grief and his attempt to process it in some meaningful way?
Guitarist Steven Hancoff thinks so. And he is so taken with the cello suites that he has transcribed them for his own instrument.
We listen this week to selections from Hancoff’s 2015 recording entitled the Six Suites for Cello Solo for Acoustic Guitar and hear how Bach’s masterpieces transcend their original instrumentation.
