Georg Philipp Telemann: A Prolific Composer

Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, December 16, 2018 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart

Georg Philipp Telemann has the distinction being listed by the Guinness Book of World Records as the most prolific composer in history. While history almost relegated him to a footnote in the evolution of baroque music, his work has been rediscovered and is much admired in modern times.

Telemann was Bach’s contemporary and close friend, and both Bach and Handel studied his music. In his day, Telemann, who was largely self-taught, was considered the most successful composer in Germany and was highly regarded by critics and fellow musicians. This week, we’ll hear why when enjoy three of his Christmas Cantatas from the 1991 Harmonia Mundi album, “Telemann: Cantates de Noel”.
