Bach sonatas for Viola de Gamba
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, November 3, 2019 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
At the time Bach's sonatas BWV 1027-29 for viola da gamba and harpsichord were composed, the viola da gamba was already becoming obsolete. There's debate about whenand why these sonatas were composed. Were they written for Bach's patron in Cöthen, Prince Leopold, who was an amateur gambist? Or were they written later after Bach moved to Leipzig?
Whatever the case, these sonatas are generally performed on the cello today, and this week we listen to an acclaimed recording from 1963 featuring legendary French cellist Paul Tortelier and harpsichordist Robert Veyron-Lacroix.
