Film Screening: Cine Casual and WDAV Present Los Hermanos

SPECIAL GUEST ANNOUNCEMENT: WDAV and Cine Casual are delighted to announce that renowned violinist Ilmar Gavilán, one of the two classical musician brothers featured in Los Hermanos, will be our special guest at this event. Gavilán will join WDAV General Manager Frank Dominguez for a pre-film Q&A and live solo performance during the pre-screening program. A native of Havana, Cuba, Gavilán is a founding member of the GRAMMY Award-winning Harlem Quartet and has built a remarkable career as a performer, educator, and recording artist. Please join WDAV and Cine Casual as we welcome this extraordinary artist to Davidson!

In celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month, Cine Casual and WDAV Classical Public Radio have partnered to present a free outdoor screening of the award-winning documentary Los Hermanos:
Virtuoso Afro-Cuban-born brothers—violinist Ilmar and pianist Aldo—live on opposite sides of a geopolitical chasm a half-century wide. Tracking their parallel lives in New York and Havana, their poignant reunion, and their momentous first performances together, Los Hermanos/The Brothers offers a nuanced, often startling view of estranged nations through the lens of music and family.
Featuring an electrifying, genre-bending score, composed by Cuban Aldo López-Gavilán, performed with his American brother, Ilmar, and with guest appearances by maestro Joshua Bell and the Harlem Quartet.
Frank Dominguez, WDAV’s General Manager and host of Concierto, will kick off the event with remarks and live classical music beginning at 7:30 PM. The film will begin shortly after sundown.
This event is free to attend, but pre-registration is highly encouraged! As you RSVP, you’ll see an option to “Pay What You Can.” All proceeds benefit Cine Casual and WDAV as we work to make more accessible community programs like this one possible. RSVP now at Eventbrite.
Know Before You Go:
Parking in downtown Davidson may be limited on a Friday night! We recommend arriving early. Public parking is available directly across the street from the Davidson Town Green behind the retail buildings (see a full parking map here).
Don’t forget to bring your lawn chairs and blankets! Seating will not be provided on site.
Attendees are welcome to bring outside snacks and drinks, but alcohol is not permitted. Concessions from Manolo’s Latin Bakery will be available for purchase on site.

En honor al Mes de la Herencia Hispana, Cine Casual y WDAV Classical Public Radio se han unido para presentar el galardonado documental Los Hermanos:
Dos hermanos virtuosos nacidos en Cuba, el violinista Ilmar y el pianista Aldo, viven en lados opuestos de un abismo geopolítico que dura medio siglo. Siguiendo sus vidas paralelas en Nueva York y La Habana, su conmovedora reunión, y sus primeras actuaciones trascendentales juntos, Los Hermanos / The Brothers ofrece una visión matizada, a menudo sorprendente de naciones distantes a través del lente de la música y la familia.
Con una partitura electrizante compuesta por el cubano Aldo López-Gavilán, e interpretada con su hermano estadounidense, Ilmar, con apariciones destacadas del maestro Joshua Bell y el Harlem Quartet.
