A Trio Sonata for Father’s Day
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, June 20, 2021 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
The trio sonata, music for three voices, had pride of place in the Baroque era as far as chamber music was concerned. Its strict form consists of either slow-fast-slow-fast movements (church sonata) or slow-fast-slow movements (chamber sonata). Although it was fading from popularity a bit in Bach's day, Bach continued to write trio sonatas, perhaps for teaching purposes because of their clear formal structure.
Three talented Swiss musicians, flutists Kaspar Zehnder, Ana Oltean, and harpsichordist Vital Julian Frey, have released a new album of Bach trio sonatas on the Ars Produktion label, and we sample some tracks this week.
