Arne: Six keyboard concertos
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, September 9, 2018 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Thomas Augustine Arne was an 18th century English composer best known for his patriotic song Rule Britannia, a version of God Save the King, which became the British national anthem, and the song A-Hunting We Will Go. He was also a leading British theatre composer of the 18th century, working at Drury Lane and Covent Garden.
This week we listen to a 1988 album on the Chandos label featuring the six keyboard concertos by Thomas Arne, which were designed to be played either on organ, harpsichord or fortepiano. The music is sourced from the prodigious amount of theatre music Arne wrote throughout his career. They may have been compiled c. 1750, but were not published until years after Arne’s death in 1778.
These recordings feature the ensemble, Cantilena, led by its founder, the late Adrian Shepherd. Roger Bevan Williams performs on the organ in Henry Wood Hall in Glasgow.
