Bach: A Set of English Suites
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, February 16, 2020 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Bach wrote his first set of suites for keyboard around 1713 or 1714. These first six suites are known as the English Suites, BWV 806-811. Bach himself did not give them this name. Its origin is uncertain, but scholars agree it does not indicate that the music is English in character. Rather, it's thought they may have been inspired by Charles Dieupart, a French composer living in London – hence the "English" moniker. American pianist Andrew Rangell has just released a 2-CD set of the complete English Suites, and we'll listen to a representative sample this week.
