In the middle of the twentieth century, artists colonies became a new way for both visual artists and composers to ‘get away from it all’ while finding companionship and inspiration in one another.
The MacDowell Colony, Yaddo and North Carolina’s own Black Mountain were havens for just such gathering spots.
