Handel’s Opus
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, September 23, 2018 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Many questions surround Handel’s Opus 1, a group of 12 sonatas, largely because they were published twice in Handel’s lifetime by two different publishers, Jeanne Roger in Amsterdam and John Walsh in London. The discrepancies between the two publications has led to varying instrumentations on modern recordings of the sonatas.
This week we hear a recording from 2009 by the Academy of Ancient Music and Richard Egarr using the Walsh edition which calls for solo instruments with harpsichord accompaniment.
And Rachel talks with Celtic fiddler Jamie Laval about the upcoming performance of his new composition, Dans Breizh: Concerto for violin, viola and orchestra, with the Davidson College Orchestra and violist Rosemary Warren-Green. Laval is classical trained and talks about how he marries that background with his love of folk music.
