Highlights from Purcell, Bach and Hildegard
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, November 7, 2021 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Highlights of this week's edition of Biscuits and Bach include: English composer Henry Purcell's The Fairy Queen, some of his finest theatre music written only three years before his death at 35; Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No. 5 featuring Richard Egarr; and Bach's Cantata BWV 139: "Happy is the man, who to his God". We'll also hear a short work by Hildegard of Bingen, the prodigiously talented polymath of twelfth century Germany who, in addition to composing music, was renowned as a writer, philosopher, and Benedictine abbess.
