Out of Italy

Before the 18th century, Italy was considered the center of music-making in Europe. But the 18th century saw a mass emigration of Italian musicians to other countries. Giacobbe Basevi Cervetto, Giambatista Cirri and Francesco Geminiani went to London. Luigi Boccherini moved to Madrid. And Antonio Vivaldi died in Vienna while seeking employment in Austria and Germany. Sonatas and duos for cello by these composers is the focus of a new recording on the Avie label called "Out of Italy" featuring eminent baroque cellist Phoebe Carrai and her protégé Beiliang Zhu.
We'll hear selections from this album, and Rachel will talk to Scott Allen Jarrett, artistic director of Bach Akademie Charlotte, about the 2nd annual Charlotte Bach Festival.
