Preserving Legacy in Women’s Hands
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, September 8, 2019 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
This week we'll explore tracks from an intriguing new album that tells the story of how women of the 18th century shaped the legacy of the Bach family through their use of the harpsichord and fortepiano. The album "Sisters, Face to Face: The Bach Legacy in Women's Hands" is based on research by harpsichordist Dr. Rebecca Cypress which has revealed that the harpsichord was not suddenly abandoned around 1780 in favor of the fortepiano.
In fact, for decades in in-home music salons, usually run by women, the two instruments were played together. Often the music of Bach and his family was performed in these settings. These woman-led salons helped ensure Bach's legacy survived into the Romantic era.
This week we'll also talk with Jean Anderson, a North Carolina cookbook author and member of the James Beard Cookbook Hall of Fame, about her latest publication "Kiln to Kitchen: Favorite Recipes from Beloved North Carolina Potters". Anderson takes us on a tour of North Carolina potteries and shares recipes from the potters themselves — recipes that can be cooked and served in their creations.
