Stephen Darlington on Durante’s Requiem Mass
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, May 20, 2018 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Francesco Durante was a Neopolitan contemporary of J.S. Bach who gained fame in his time as a composer and as a teacher whose pupils included Paisiello and Pergolesi. His Requiem Mass in C minor was never published but has survived thanks to more than 50 manuscript copies.
Stephen Darlington, Director of Music at Christ Church, Oxford, describes it as one of the most important orchestral Requiem settings of the 18th century. He joins us to talk about this somewhat overlooked work, and we’ll hear the premiere recording of his own modern performing edition of it by the Christ Church Cathedral Choir of Oxford, soloists from The Sixteen, Oxford Baroque, and organist Clive Driskill-Smith.
