Stylus Fantasticus
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, January 21, 2018 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
In the century before Bach was born, German composers were infatuated with and inspired by the experimental works of Italian composers, particularly the instrumental sonata form. The Germans wrote music with flamboyance and virtuosity that was unencumbered by vocals or words. Music writers of the day referred to this modern style as “stylus fantasticus.”
This week we explore some of this ornate and exuberant music when we feature the 2014 album from American early music ensemble, Quicksilver, entitled “Fantasticus: Extravagant and Virtuosic Music of the German Seventeenth Century.”
