Telemann String Concertos
Program: Biscuits & Bach
Aired: Sunday, August 27, 2017 @ 7:00 am
Hosted by Rachel Stewart
Ask the modern listener who was the top composer in Germany in the early eighteenth century, and the answer will probably be Bach. From the modern perspective, that is true. But if you were Bach’s contemporary in Germany, the answer would probably be Telemann.
Georg Philipp Telemann is one of the most prolific composers ever, and he was immensely popular and successful in his own time. He was also self-taught musically.
This week we sample an album of his string concertos performed by Musica Antiqua Cologne and recorded in 2000. It’s just a small portion of his output but reveals why his contemporaries (and the rest of us) found his music so appealing.
